The Damned – Theta

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

One of those records that has yet to ‘blow up’ and get all sorts of ‘library glam funk cosmic disco mod psych dancer breaks’ type eBay action (if I’d picked up another copy…..). It is one of those records though. Lots of the right type of drums, a heavy riff; even a spacey breakdown. It’s fantastically good.

It has nothing to do with Captain Sensible btw. The a-side (‘Morning Bird’) is a more typical glam affair and unfortunately was comped on ‘Velvet Tinmine’ meaning there’s far too many people looking for this already rare record. Enjoy.

Kool Herc & Jazzy Jay on the Radio 1 Rap Show 1996

Friday, March 27th, 2009

From my own tape archives this is an appearance of two of hip hops most important DJs on Tim Westwoods then relatively new Radio 1 Rap Show (he moved over from Capital Radio a year earlier). Kool Herc and Jazzy Jay play classic breaks, funk, soul and old school hip hip cuts. Westwood also interviews and there’s a brief Stick-E & The Hoods (remember them?) interlude in there too.

Jel and Odd Nosdam – Tune In An Afternoon

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Giving a hip hop producer some money to buy records and then filming the beat they make is not the most original of ideas but it still fascinates the hell out of me. Here anticon’s Jel and Odd Nosdam spend $40 on records and even play the resulting track out in an unlikely looking bar.

You can download the track they create here.

Selected Sound Library

Friday, March 13th, 2009

I love ‘Selected Sound’. There’s a bunch of killer tracks throughout those copper coloured LPs.

First up the Berry Lipman penned ‘Act Of Treat’ from ‘Action & Tension & Space’. Monster synth riff, funky drums, stabs – a huge record. Still uncomped and unsampled I think.

Rex Brown Company – Act Of Threat

Then there’s Klaus Weiss’ super dusted moody synth cut ‘Survivor’ from His sought after ‘Time Signals’ LP. Electronic funk has never sounded so good.

David Hopkinson – Cutting Up My Friends

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

I’ve been fighting the temptation to post Kutiman’s YouTube cut-ups. Not because I don’t like them (they’re some of the best things I’ve ever seen) but because they’re all over the place and I’m trying my best to post things that aren’t on every blog/forum/etc. Instead (almost instead…don’t click that link up there) I’m posting David Hopkinson’s similar but different and rather fantastic ‘Cutting Up My Friends’.

David’s also responsible for ‘Monkey Jazz‘, ‘Mr Hopkinson’s Computer‘, ‘Stoloff & Hopkinsonā„¢‘ and is a top man to boot.

Stetsasonic – On Fire

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

One of those hip hop LPs that sold well at the time but now seems to be rather overlooked and underrated. Nice and cheap on vinyl though and well worth grabbing particularly for the live drums and cuts of ‘Go Stetsa I’ and the 808 beats of the title track.
